Miss Glutena – glutenfree and delicious

Before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, I never thought twice about buying onion rings from the supermarket. They were an easy snack or side dish I could grab on the go. But after my diagnosis, I quickly realized how hard it was to find glutenfree onion rings on the shelves. It became frustrating to crave something so simple yet be unable to find a safe version.

The good news is that making glutenfree onion rings at home is surprisingly easy! Once I started making them myself, I realized how simple and satisfying the process is. All you need is some glutenfree flour, a few seasonings, and of course, fresh onions. It only takes a little bit of time, and the results are completely worth it.

Whether you’re making them as a side dish or just for a snack, they’re crunchy, flavorful, and perfect for satisfying that onion ring craving. Now, making them at home has become a regular treat, and honestly, they taste even better than any store-bought version.

Making them yourself is definitely a game-changer!

Equipment

  • 1 pan
  • 3 bowls

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 150 g gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika powder optional
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 250 g gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying rapeseed or sunflower oil

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into 0,5cm (or 1/4-inch) thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside in a bowl.
  • Prepare 3 different bowls: In the first bowl, combine the gluten-free flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt and black pepper. Stir well to combine. In the second bowl, whisk the egg until smooth. Fill the breadcrumbs in your last bowl.
  • Dredge the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, ensuring it's evenly coated, then dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it in the gluten-free breadcrumbs. Repeat with all the onion rings.
  • Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat, enough to submerge the onion rings (about 2,5 cm or 1 inches of oil).
  • Fry the Onion Rings: Once the oil is hot (you can test by dropping a small piece into the oil—if it sizzles immediately, it's ready), carefully place a few onion rings at a time into the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
  • Drain and Serve: Remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce (like ketchup or ranch).
